Taste and Appearance:

Yangzhi Manna (Coconut and Mango) is a very classic Hong Kong Style dessert. Its main ingredients are grapefruit, mango and tapioca balls stewed in coconut milk. Although the color and fragrance of Yangzhi nectar come from mango, the essential key comes from grapefruit, which is crispy, sweet and sour, and the soft glutinous rice enhances the taste. Mango and grapefruit are rich in vitamins, thus it is a delicious and nutritious dessert.

Ingredients:

Water, coconut juice, mango, milk, grapefruit, tapioca balls and sugar.

Method of Preparation:

  • Put tapioca balls into hot water for 25 minutes, then rinse with with cold water till they balls are transparent.
  • Mix milk with coconut milk, then bring to boil and slowly cool down.
  • Then, add mango, sugar into the coconut milk fluid and stir to make everything blend evenly.
  • Add tapioca balls and grapefruit, mix in evenly.
  • Once done cool in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before eating.

History:

In traditional portraits, Avalokitesvara holds Yang Zhi in his right hand and drags the bottle with his left hand. The dew in the bottle is called Yang Zhi manna. The Yangzhi manna in Guanyin Bodhisattva's hand will bring people luck and auspiciousness.

In ancient books, it was recorded that Avalokitesvara used the willow vase in his hand to take the sea water from the East China Sea to save the people in the dry area.

Later generations thought the story was important. They thought that this dessert could help people eliminate the heat in the summer and be beneficial to people, so they named it Yangzhi manna.
